January is known as the dead season in the small Smoky mountain community of Hanover County, North Carolina. For dog trainer and wilderness expert Raine Stockton, who hasn't had a client in six months, this season has been deader than most. When the New Day Wilderness Program for Troubled Teens offers her a job leading a group of students on a winter camping expedition as part of their rehabilitation program, Raine jumps at the chance-- particularly since it means she will be able to take her golden retriever, Cisco, with her.
But something is not right at New Day, and Raine and Cisco soon find themselves caught in a web of intrigue, suspicion and sabotage. As the group moves deeper into the wilderness beneath steadily worsening weather, Raine begins to fear she and Cisco may soon find themselves trapped on the mountainside... with a killer.
"There can't be too many golden retrievers in mystery fiction for my taste."

The Dead Season Raine Stockton Dog Mysteries Book 6 edition by Donna Ball Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I've enjoyed all of the books in this series very much, but so far, this is my favorite. It would make a wonderful movie. I love Raine and Cisco, and everyone who comprises Raine's family. This book had me holding my breath. The most exciting one yey. And now I'm on to the next.
I really enjoyed this series. I like learning about search and rescue dogs, loved the way the characters love their dogs and,oh, the dogs are just awesome. This is not a schmaltzy "from the dog's point of view" novel (don't get me wrong I LOVE the Chet & Bernie series, but most novels from an animal's point of view are silly) - it clearly is from the human perspective. It's also not a bait and switch - the dogs really are an integral part of the plot - some so called "dog" centered novels just have canines as bit players.
I recommend this whole series to anyone who is interested in working dogs and mysteries.
I've read all the Raine Stockton novels in the series so far and this one really grabbed me. I love the literary device of the interrogation she employs which only heightens the tension. Ball deals with the issue of child abuse as she has done in other books, in such a way that the book was not offensive to me. (I can't deal with books that are too graphic). The focus of the book is on characters and development. I love the growth of the bond between Raine and Cisco through the novels as Raine learns to trust Cisco's instincts and as Cisco grows up. Plus, as with the best cozies, I learn a lot about dogs, wilderness camping and human nature.
Raine Stockton and her faithful canine Cisco end up on a camping trip with a bunch of juvenile delinquents led by a truly bizarre couple. This was a bit different from the other books in the series, but it was well done. The characters are interesting and quirky. You can feel the tension between Raine and the leader of the group as well as the compassion she shows towards the least popular of the teenagers. The suspense continues build ... it's a real page turner.
Raine and Cisco accept a job leading troubled teenagers on a winter wilderness hike, and soon find themselves trapped on a mountainside… with a killer. Paul Evans and his wife Rachel were both certified counselors, and they advertised for a staff of trained therapists, social workers and wilderness experts, so when Raine and Cisco, were asked to come along and help out with the kids little did they know what they were getting themselves in for.
Although New Day Wilderness Program was a therapeutic camp for troubled teens, what Raine and Cisco encountered on this expedition was a far cry from troubled teens that's for sure.
Although this is the 6th book in the series, it is the first of the series that I've read, and author Donna Ball has gained, yet, another fan! Actually, having loved "Flash" and it's sequel " The Sound of Running Horses," I'm already a fan of this fine author, but now I'm a fan of this series, as well!
Great characters, intriguing plot, and a smooth-flowing storyline all come together to make this an enjoyable and moderately suspenseful read. Fans of this author are sure to enjoy this book, as will soon-to-be fans who enjoy well-plotted and well-written adventure/mystery stories.
I have enjoyed every book in this series mainly because I'm a lover of dogs. Ms. Ball has constructed a story aroun very likable characters while she also enlightens the readers on the intricacies of a variety of dog training methods. The dead season was for me, the most suspenseful so far. Raine Stockton is a willful, impatient but admirable character who seems to be prone to making the same mistakes over and over regarding her relationships and picking up on Cisco's clues to her. But I'm enjoying them and plan to read every one till there are no more!
